Description

Rosetta 2

The official Mac support docs say that Rosetta 2 enables a Mac with Apple silicon to use apps built for a Mac with an Intel processor.

Rosetta 2 was introduced in 2020 as a component of macOS Big Sur, and as part of the Mac transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon (Apple M1 and so on), allowing Intel applications to run on Apple silicon-based Macs.

You can install Rosetta 2 (on your Mac with Apple silicon) with:

softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

! Note that it is very difficult to remove Rosetta 2 once it is installed !

Rosetta 1

Rosetta was introduced in 2006 in Mac OS X Tiger as part of the Mac transition from PowerPC processors to Intel processors, allowing PowerPC applications to run on Intel-based Macs.

Support for Rosetta 1 was dropped since Mac OS X Lion (10.7) in 2011.
